Princess Avengers: CAPTAIN AMERICA by Christopher-Stoll Princess Avengers: CAPTAIN AMERICA by Christopher-Stoll
The next entry in my ongoing series of Disney Marvel Mashups!!!

The leader of the Avengers!! The top-dog! The big cheese!! Frozen during a time of true patriotism, this fearless hero has leapt forward in history to stand for the real America she once knew!!
Finally here!! It's CAPTAIN NATIVE AMERICA!!

Anyway, I hate talking about my process, but... well....
I wanted to change up my formula a bit. To bring across both the position of Captain America as the leader of the group, and Pocahontas' willpower and self-sacrifice. Ultimately, to try and make her look empowered.
I'm not sure how well I succeeded.
Still, I'm hoping that the series will hold up well stylistically once it can be viewed as a whole. I try not to see them as individuals, but rather their place in the group.
Perhaps in need of some revision, but I've grown accustomed to releasing these well before their "completion!" So enjoy.

Who do you think the next princess will be!?! Who do you WANT the next Avenger mashup to be? If you think a princess should be paired with a hero let me know too! I haven't decided who is going to be who just yet!

LEAVE A COMMENT TO HELP ME DECIDE!!!!!!! 8D

I'm just going to go hid in a corner and cry for a while. TT
If marvel ever does a crossover or alternative universe with a native american as Captain America for other main heroes.
Then I'm happy enough to die for it.

Is incredibly offensive! I don't understand how people fail to see that! America is not Pocahantas' country. It's the name of the country that killed many of her people, and imprisoned them into little fenced off areas, took over her land and erased most of her ways! Even before I first Googled Turtle Island, knew that this was bad!

I respectfully disagree. Here's why...

-First this image has been printed and reproduced (with permission) in several Native American literary and academic journals, and the reception from the Native American community was very positive. So since the people the image loosely depicts find it empowering I wonder who you think it offends.
A more suitable statement from you might have been "I find this offensive" instead of "is incredibly offensive" since you seem to be the only one, and then you could have gone on to explain why.

-I think that depicting the Captain America as a blonde, blue-eyed, white, heterosexual male for decades is a far more troubling message than fan-art depicting an ethnic woman in his place.
And this is, after all, an interpretation of an already white-washed child friendly version of a Native American. If you had criticisms of the Disney version of Pocahontas I'd almost certainly be onboard, but instead your objection seems to be that I just associated a Native American princess with the United States through Captain America. Which I don't think people, even real Native Americans, find automatically offensive.

-I have several other pieces in this series depicting women of color in place of the white male Avengers. No one has commented on how it's problematic to have the Arabian princess Jasmine as a stand-in for a superhero whose whole deal is fighting ostensible Muslim terrorists (Post-Colonial Oppression and Occupation in the Middle East).
Or a Tiana as a black woman controlling a shadowy military outfit (American Slavery)
Or Mulan (Chinese Railroad Workers).
There are a lot of atrocities that you can point to, and there are many ways that you can bring up issues involving representation and social justice, but you gravitated towards this one.
Why this piece in particular? (Hold on to that thought because I'm about to address the reason).

-Your heart is probably in the right place, eager to point out negative portrayals... But you aren't doing anything to encourage understanding or debate, and it's clear that main reason you commented is to indicate that YOU knew how bad it was. But it's just self-gratification, you made it all about yourself.
"I don't understand HOW people fail to see [what I can see]"
"Even before I googled Turtle Island I KNEW that this was bad!"

It's like you swept into the room and said "I AM VERY AWARE OF WHAT AMERICA HAS DONE TO NATIVE PEOPLES AND NOBODY SEEMS TO CARE." and then pretended that you were actually criticizing something problematic. Nope. All you've done is call attention to your own awareness (or lack thereof). It's not bad exactly... just immature.

In the future there are much better ways to criticize, and I think you'll be surprised how many people are willing to consider your point of view if you raise concerns without accusing anyone, and talk about potentially offensive materials without making it all about how enlightened you think you are.

Good day,
Chris

Firstly, I want to thank you for actually responding. Many people who are as successful as you are tend not to pay so much attention to every little comment. I really did not expect you to respond. Maybe a fan stepping up to defend your honor, thinking that I meant insult, but not you yourself.

For your first point, I was not the only one who found it offensive. I posted on Facebook about a picture that I found offensive, and posted it in the comments. People that I know that are Native American and of Native American descent expressed similar feelings on it. That I am the only one who has said to you that it is offensive surprises me.

Your second point, I agree on. I don't hate the picture, nor do I find it tasteless or crude. It is obviously a well thought out piece of work, and I appreciate the sentiment that you had when making it. I was still shocked by the picture when I wrote that. Not angry, mind you, but very shocked. If I had written that, say, now, I would have explained why I and others found it so offensive.

As to your third point, I saw more of what I thought you were trying to depict in those than atrocities. Each of these pictures make a statement, and even the Pocahantas one makes a positive one. It may be that I was recently educated by a Native American on "Amerikka" and reminded of it still affects living Native Americans. I would also point out that I do not connect Jasmine with a religion. That region of the world, yes, but not with Islam. Nor can I connect SHIELD with slavery. The equivalent to the Pocahantas one would be her in a Confederate themed suit, or maybe designed as a member of the the East India Trading Co. I also can't see a connection between Hawkeye and railroad workers. Perhaps I simply fail to make those connections that are there. Being a majority in multiple senses and egalitarian, I strive to learn more about how I can do better and achieve social justice and all that cheesy stuff that gets me sneered at for being a nutty Tumblr feminist. So, if I can't make those connections, I'd like to.

I'm not sure if criticism is what I wanted at all. Like I said above, I don't think that the picture is bad or not worth having been made or is more problematic than anything else. I and others have found it offensive. That doesn't mean that there isn't merit. Criticism means to me that something needs to be fixed. Your picture is not broken. The statement that it makes is not broken or wrong. It is something that I and others found offensive - but that's it. I really expected a comment by someone else saying "That's kind of messed up, but I see what you're trying to say", but I found nothing but comments that didn't address it at all.

And yes, my comment didn't address it well, either. Like I said, I was still in shock. I should have allowed myself to calm down and formulate a proper respone to your picture, out of respect if nothing else. Hasty posts is what gives "social justice warriors" a baad name.

To be honest, my posts and comments are usually more like this current one, not the former one. And I'm usually bewildered by others' agitated statements and responses. I never understood why people couldn't enter a debate without getting so emotional. That I was on the other end this time was embarrassing. I am rarely so affected by something found online like I was by seeing this picture, so formulating responses in a calm and beneficial manner is usually simple. I'm not accustomed to feeling strong negative emotions, and so not with dealing with it.

As such, I do not regret making that comment. It gave me an oppurtunity to learn what happens when I forgo the oppurtunity that the internet provides to make well thought out responses. If I had learned that at another time, the person who responds to me may not do so in such a reasonable manner.

Thank you for responding, and I apologise for any discrepancies or typos. It is going on 4am here, and I should have been asleep hours ago. I just wanted to check DeviantArt to see if anyone had decided to join my contest, and then felt that an immediate response should be made to your note. Not necessary, perhaps, but I hate to delay, due to my many memory issues.

Respectfully
Aramis

That was a fantastic comment. :)
I hope that my initial post didn't sound too antagonistic, it's easy to be reactionary and dismissive within the spacious confines of an internet comment box.
I have made more than my fair share of "this is offensive, fuck you" comments on the internet, and it's something we should all take steps to avoid.
People are people, and at the end of the day we are all doing the best we can.

That said, if you have any specific criticisms of the piece I'd love to hear them and talk them out. I'd even be up for making changes if someone made a compelling argument that my art was insensitive or inappropriately representing a disenfranchised group.

Pocahontas, as the daughter of Chief Powhatan, is indisputably the first American of the Disney Princesses, and how can you be more American than the Indigenous peoples of the Americas?

But I'll probably be offering a full sized downloadable version soon :)

Something about her legs seem a bit strange to me but I don't care cause it's rally fantastic as a whole and that's before the awesomeness of having the Native American amongst Disney princesses as Captain America (and the leaf on the shield? Made me grin).

As for suggestions... Kida as Thor I think?

I'd have done Merida as Hawkeye and Mulan as Black Widow it could work the other way too (Merida done stuff in past not proud off, strong and independent and defying expectations etc)

i can't wait to see what else you do b/c i'm really loving this crossover! when you finish all the avenger members, do you think that you'll do one picture with each of the new avenger princesses in an epic pose? lol i just think that would look really cool and be an awesome way to end it because, like i said, you've done a fantastic job so far!

I plan to! It's taken quite a bit longer than I'd like to finish up the princesses because I've spent the last few months settling into my new job in Asia.
Also, because of the differences in size, lighting, and direction (ultimately, I just never originally intended for them to occupy the same space) it's taking some heavy revision to make them work together in the same shot.
It'll happen eventually though! Stay Tuned!
