GraveWalker by Christopher-Stoll GraveWalker by Christopher-Stoll
A cobbled together golem of dried bones and headstones, the gravewalker is an earthen creature that gains vitality from the corpses buried within it.

Sometimes, when enough human bodies are buried in the same location their essence infects the local area with supernatural strength and intent. These slow lumbering creatures often contain the corpses of dozens of bodies, ranging from the recently buried to the completely decayed.

The human remains within the Gravewalker act like batteries, infusing the creature with afterlife energies that might have otherwise created a common ghost or zombie.
Typically harmless wanderers, these large elemental-like specimens are often instilled with the lingering intentions of the corpses inside of it. This often manifests as a borderline manic depression or wanderlust that sends these cobbled creatures solemnly stumbling long distances (often by the light of half moons) in search of closure and peace.

Warning: There have been reports of battlefield Gravewalkers that arise from mass killings, these creatures are often more dangerous. Fueled by murderous desires for revenge and larger pools of fresher bodies, they become a deadly force to be reckoned with.
The risk of Gravewalker phenomenons during wartime (although rare) is why most modern militaries choose to bury or burn the dead separately and often in thin-soiled or sandy regions.

Done for the Creature Lovers mini-contest this week (creature-lovers.deviantart.com….

What happens to the creatures when the corpse energy runs out? Do they just gradually slow down until they stop moving at all? And are they known to consume corpses if they happen to find some?

They have never been recorded consuming corpses. The energy that suffuses them can last for years under ideal circumstances, but like all things, will eventually extinguish. Left to their own devices these creatures will eventually crumble into rubble, their expended energies sputtering away with each pendulous swing of their massive stony limbs.
However this rarely occurs.
Humans who spot these creatures are guided by ancient superstitions to either drive them away, or destroy them. Despite their prodigious strength, most gravewalkers are too docile to effectively defend themselves. Add to this the confusion for these slow amalgamations to suddenly be violently attacked by those people their spirits may have known and loved in life.

So they're basically harmless collective ghosts. And humans are as hateful cowardly bullies as ever. That's why I usually sympathize with monsters :)

Your comments are so detailed and finely written. Are you a writer, too?

It's difficult for anybody to consider themselves artists, when there's always a lot of better art than theirs. And that 'too' has double meaning, because I also happen to have some writing talents, but have nothing interesting yet to write about. I write a lot of philosophical comments, though.
