The mind-bending monsters in this book include:

  • Blood sucking Penanggalan, flying severed heads with trailing intestines that glow and glitter like fireflies.
  • Mysterious Yuki Onna, whose transparent skin and piercing eyes lure men to freeze in isolated Japanese mountain ranges.
  • The monstrous Scylla, a sea creature who dwells in narrow straits and takes the lives of unwary seamen with her six ravenous heads.
  • Pitiless Succubus, sexually aggressive demons that drain the living of their life force.
  • The obsidian butterfly Itzpapalotl, a fearsome skeletal warrior goddess who rules over the paradise world of Tamoanchan.
  •  And dozens more, for a grand total of more than fifty unique creatures!! See the full list here.

While working on my previous book, A Natural History of the Fantastic, I spent several years researching humanity's darkest monsters. To my disappointment, a wealth of expressive and interesting creatures have been completely forgotten. Everyone knows harpies, medusa, and hags... but have you heard of the great Dearg Due, Hari Onnago, or Campe? The Feminomicon was born out of love for our forgotten female gods and monsters. It’s made with a desire to reinvent the mythology and come up with a new and exiting world that captures the empowering essence of these often overlooked creatures. It unfolds in a universe inspired by ancient societies with an epic scale and realistic fully-realized feel.

Check it out here! I know you won't be disappointed.
Much Love,
Chris

Hi, I have just bought your book A Natural History of the Fantastic, and I love it! It is clear that a lot of love and dedication has been put into it. If you don't mind me asking though, what was the kappa evolved from?

Despite being a vertebrate humanoid the Kappa is distinguished from Orks, Humans, and Minotaur by its non-mammalian nature. Kappa are the last of an ancient lineage of sapient amphibious beings referred to as kawako (川子) or "river children." Their last known relative, the swamp beast, died out near 70,000 years ago. They evolved from an ancient (fictional) variety of amphibian than is easily identifiable in the fossil record due to their unusual skull structures and exposed nervous systems. Branching from our lineage of vertebrates nearly 400 million years ago.
The kappa's relative similarity to humanity's appearance is a primary example of convergent evolution
, the process where extremely different organisms independently evolve similar appearances or traits because they inhabit the same environments or ecological niches. Think of sharks and dolphins, not related but with very similar structures.

The evolutionary tree in A Natural History of the Fantastic is a little patchy and not to be taken too seriously since it has all of these fictional creatures coexisting in the same biological history. Hope that made sense and cleared some stuff up! :D

Thanks for purchasing a copy of the book! It means a lot to me :D

Ah, I see! Kind of reminds me of my own kappas from my realistic mythology project. Thanks for the explanation!
